1.2 billion liters of water are “wasted” among Southern Water companies.

A UNION is calling for an end to privatized water after “water wasted 500 Olympic-sized swimming pools every day for the past year”.

Southern Water, South East Water, Thames, South West and Yorkshire Water leaked the equivalent of 16 million bath tubs, the GMB says.

The union claims that these private water companies leaked 1.2 billion liters of water every 24 hours in fiscal 2020-2021.

By August 24, each company will have enforced hose bans on customers.

GMB has long advocated “putting water back in public hands”.

Andy Prendergast, GMB national secretary, said: “Tens of millions of people face a hose ban as these privatized companies drain more than 500 Olympic-size swimming pools down the drain every day.

“It’s a disgrace that customers face a £1,000 fine while private water fat cats waste millions while not doing enough to address leaks and refusing to invest in the workforce.

“The privatization of water was a disastrously failed experiment, it’s time to put this important natural resource back into public hands.”

A Southern Water spokesman said: “Tackling spills is a high priority for us.

“We cannot tell our customers not to use hoses unless we do our part.

“Last year we repaired 22,000 leaks and in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, where we have a hosepipe ban, we repair 250 a week.

“Importantly, we have 7,000 acoustic loggers installed across our network that detect and locate leaks, and 100 of Hampshire’s repairs are based on that data.

“These leaks are often found in mains buried deep underground and are invisible at the surface, but can leak far more water than the visible leaks from near-surface communications pipes.

“In the Southampton area, where the technology was first introduced, this has helped bring leakage below 10 per cent.”
