Destiny 2 has grown over the years into a massive franchise with an even bigger universe to explore. From exploring moons to boarding warships, even the people we meet along the way have many stories for Wardens to hear. However, some of these characters have been in the franchise for quite some time, but we still know very little about them. So let’s discuss today 10 Destiny 2 characters we’re dying to get more backstory for.
Since its introduction in the Forsaken DLC, the Drifter has always been an odd character to learn. In the few years since we’ve met him, we learn bits and pieces of who he is and how he’s survived this long – eat Hive and Fallen? Drink Vex Milk?
He’s also long been associated with other shady characters like the Spider, so it’s reasonable to assume there have been odd deals with them. Needless to say, the Drifter is easily one of the most unique characters the franchise has seen, and learning more about his mysterious past would be quite the thrill.
Unfortunately, Lord Shaxx, overseer of all Crucibles, was a character who never had the proper time to shine. Over the years in both Destiny 1 and Destiny 2 we learn little bits of information about Lord Shaxx, specifically his exploits during the Collapse.
That’s all we really get to know about him, however, as unlike other characters, he’s never had a season or DLC in which he was the focus. It’s safe to say that he’s one of the most beloved characters in the franchise and it’s about time he got more time to shine so we can learn more about this magnificent titan.
The Stranger, also known as Elizabeth Bray, has always been a stranger (no pun intended) to the Wardens for the most part. Although she returned to the franchise in the Beyond Light DLC for the first time since Destiny 1’s base game, she was not the focus of the DLC as Variks and Eramis largely filled that role.
However, we do know that she can travel between timelines and has seen a wealth of horrors from the past. It would be exciting to learn more about this dark past or future, to possibly prevent a new one from forming.
We never said this list had to be all heroes, as it’s always interesting to learn about your enemies, and the Hive’s god of war, Xivu Arath, is full of mysteries. For several seasons, Xivu Arath has repeatedly tried and failed to take control of the Dreaming City from Mara Sov. Now he wants to take control of Rasputin’s network in Season of the Seraph.
However, aside from being the Hive god of war, that’s really all we know about Xivu Arath. Of course we have known for a long time that she is one of the three siblings that the witness manipulated, Savathun and Oryx are the other two that we have already defeated. With that in mind, a proper confrontation and backstory featuring the Hive war god is overdue, and hopefully we won’t have to wait much longer for it to bear fruit.
Speaking of the Queen, Mara Sov was shy towards us even when she was introduced to the House of Wolves DLC in Destiny 1. Although we know who she is now and what she has done for us, she keeps her past very secret, only giving hints every now and then. She mainly remembers her childhood with her brother Uldren, now known as Crow, who works for the Vanguard.
Still, it would be interesting to learn more about her past, how she came to power, and how she is associated with other mysterious characters. For example, in the current season of Destiny 2, Season of the Seraph, we learn that Mara and The Stranger have known each other for a long time and usually come to blow off one another. More mysteries to explore in the future.
The stranger’s ghost/fish “thing”.
While not a “proper” character, Guardians have been desperately trying to figure out what this little creature next to the Stranger is since the launch of the Beyond Light DLC. In a short cutscene with the Stranger, Eris Morn, and the Drifter, we see this little fish “thing” appear next to the Stranger, and players assumed it could be her ghost, although it doesn’t look like a normal one.
Of course, no information about the fish has been released yet, but it might have something to do with the upcoming Lightfall DLC, as it’s very similar to some of the tech shown on Neomuna. Either way, an explanation of what this thing is is long overdue.
The Cloud Striders
A new race of characters will be introduced in the upcoming Lightfall DLC known as the Cloud Striders. They will be the main allies in our fight against Calus and the witnesses throughout the DLC. We only see a few glimpses of the two trailers we’ve gotten so far, and they’re easily the most unique characters the franchise has seen in years.
Not just for sheer aesthetics, but we also see her gliding around on what appears to be a surfboard, in a way almost like Marvel’s Silver Surfer. Anyhow, we’re very excited to learn more about these unique characters when the Lightfall DLC releases on February 23, 2023.
Since the release of Destiny 1 in 2014, poor Master Rahool has been at the mercy of countless Guardians trying to decode engrams with him. In Destiny 2, his role hasn’t changed, but he now offers some materials like Glimmer or Legendary Shards for Guardians to buy as well.
Other than that, no one really knows anything about Master Rahool as he was never given the time to tell us anything about his past, such as how he became a Cryptarch. While a full season around him shouldn’t be necessary, it would be nice to have some real dialogue from him other than “What can I do for you Titan?”.
Ikora recently had some time to shine in the Witch Queen DLC as she helped uncover the truth about the witness corrupting the hive. However, not much is known about her history. We know that she was a rising star among the Vanguard, and she quickly rose through the ranks to become one of the leaders along with Zavala.
Otherwise, she has a long history with Osiris as her teacher, and that’s it. Hopefully we’ll learn more about her with Osiris in the upcoming Lightfall DLC.
Yes, you knew this was coming. In terms of mysteries, there’s no other character in Destiny 2 – and the franchise in general – that we want to know more about than the Witness. The franchise’s long-awaited “big villain” makes his move in the upcoming Lightfall DLC, and we have a million questions.
What is the witness exactly? What is his goal? What does it want with the traveller? There is much more to ask and everything is going well. We’ll answer some of these questions when Lightfall releases on February 23, 2023. Knowing Bungie, we’ll probably have to wait until the Final Shape DLC in 2024 to finally get our bearings against the witness. Hopefully Lightfall will prove us wrong.
There you have it. These are 10 characters we’re dying to see more backstory on in Destiny 2. Be sure to check out some of our other Destiny 2 features like 10 Gifts for that special Warden in your life or How to Repair Strikes.
