After the “Game of Thrones” epilogue, HBO subscribers may have been wondering what their new “must-see” Sunday obsession will be. HBO certainly made a few choices: Between “Game of Thrones,” the network tried to capitalize on the popularity of fantasy-minded genre shows “Westworld,” the historical sci-fi series history “Lovecraft Country” and the fantasy film “His Dark Materials.” Surprisingly, the show that actually gets noticed isn’t one that takes place in a fictional world. In fact, “Succession” feels so close to reality that it’s a bit odd.
“Succession” tells the story of aging media giant Logan Roy (Brian Cox). Logan is considering stepping down as CEO of Waystar RoyCo, a large media company specializing in entertainment, news, theme parks and technology. However, withdrawing from the company he created will force Logan to choose a successor. His children were all vying for positions, but each had flaws. Kendall (Jeremy Strong) is recovering from addiction problems, Shiv (Sarah Snook) has gotten his hands on political campaigning, Roman (Kieran Culkin) is a notorious troublemaker, and Connor (Alan Ruck) is outright. ignorant of his privileges.
The question “who will become CEO?” equally interesting as the “who will sit on the throne?” debate? Similar to “House of the Dragon”, “Succession” shows how even a powerful and influential family has to deal with their personal problems.
