The Red Devils’ miserable home campaign comes to an end on Monday night when they take on Brentford in front of an increasingly apathetic crowd at Old Trafford. United are coming off a fifth season without a trophy and barring a wondrous combination of results, they will finish outside the top four.

They also need to win their last three games to avoid the shame of hitting their all-time low First League Score, so the underachievement was under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his interim replacement Ralf Rangnick.

The Portuguese has been United’s best player by far, scoring 23 goals in all competitions, but Ten Hag will have to decide if he fits into his plans. If it’s his last bow, he’ll be one of the few players worthy of every applause from the fans.
