14 best action movies by black directors

The plot of this 2010 post-apocalyptic West directed by the Hughes brothers is a bit odd, but it makes for a compelling movie. Eli (Denzel Washington) carries the world’s last copy of the Bible through the wasteland formerly known as the United States. All other copies were destroyed after the bomb dropped, maybe for religious reasons or maybe they were just for convenience purposes, not clear. Perhaps, Eli was receiving a mission from God. A voice in his head told him to bring the book west. If you’ve watched “Mad Max” or tried to buy toilet paper during the height of the pandemic, you’re familiar with the variety of trash Eli encounters on the street. Luckily, he had steel available and earned his money.

Oh, did I say Eli is blind? It’s a small detail and only really shows up once. Maybe it wasn’t remarkable at all, except that Eli shot a lot of people. I have heard of Jesus at the helm, but this is a completely different kind of intervention.

Despite the heroic pitfalls, “The Book of Eli” remains grim. Eli shoots a hairless cat in the opening scene – because he’s hungry – and things only get worse when the others join in. Gary Oldman had a lot of fun playing Bill Carnegie, the mighty leader of a rotten town and the only person interested in the book. Reading becomes less of a priority when you have to worry about cannibals deciding you’re going to make a delicious snack.
