With summer coming to an end, the season’s sales are in full swing as retailers clear old stock and make room in stores ahead of the holiday season.
This month is a great time to shop for larger outdoor furniture such as patio sets or barbecues – which means you can make the most of the late summer discounts whilst also enjoying your new purchase for the last few warm weeks before autumn really gets going.
Here we round up 16 of the top picks from outdoor sales.
When we asked landscape architects about their favorite outdoor furniture earlier this year, the Amalfi range was recognized as a great investment at the Arboretum in Carlow thanks to its strong, durable aluminum construction.
The entire range is currently on sale, including benches, loungers, a bistro set and various placemats for four, six or eight people.
The six-seater features an elegant oval table, six cushioned dining chairs, a circular parasol and base, all in elegant antique gray tones (€1,799 reduced from €2,399, arboretum.ie).
The lounge sets from the smaller budget Danish brand Jysk were praised by our experts for their hard-wearing materials, particularly the range of poly rattan furniture, which can withstand a good bit of weather and look brand new after a thorough cleaning.
Many of the latest offerings are only available in Jysk stores, of which there are 16 nationwide. Highlights include the Ullehuse six-seater lounge set (€600 reduced from €999, Jysk), a tidy corner sofa with dark gray seat and cushion covers and a table, and the Vebbestrup lounge set (€800 reduced from €1099, Jysk) , the a three-seater sofa, two chairs and two tables in soft, neutral tones.
At Marks & Spencer, minimalists will love the sleek Porto range, now available at half price. Finished in a muted gray and white palette, the six seater furniture set (€674.50 reduced from €1,349) consists of a loveseat, two armchairs, a slatted wood table and two padded footstools that serve as additional seating can extend the armchairs to loungers.
British retailer Habitat’s stylish, contemporary furniture is available through Argos, and much of the range is currently on sale.
Fans of chic Parisian decor will appreciate the Huxley Two-Seater Bistro Set (€90 reduced from €120, Argos), which consists of a glass-topped table and two wire-frame chairs in a polished brass finish, or something sturdier it’s the Samoa four-seater wooden patio set (€460 reduced from €580, Argos), a chunky table and a matching pair of eucalyptus benches.
There’s 50 pieces off a wide range of outdoor furniture at Homebase, including the Spirit Gray Metal Garden Corner Sofa Set (€700, less than €1,400), which features an aluminum frame that can be left outside year-round, removable cushions and teak end tables with slatted bases. It also comes with a teak slatted coffee table to complete the relaxed look.
If you welcomed the sunny weather this summer by sunbathing in the back garden, you can upgrade your set of old beach towels by investing in an attractive sun lounger, like the Mandal Hardwood Sun Lounger, now 40 pack cheaper (€135 reduced). from €229, Jysk). The solid eucalyptus wood frame and slatted finish will make a subtle addition to any garden or outdoor space.
If you prefer a more boho style to your homewares, check out the Gjerlev Lounge Chair, currently half price (€65 reduced from €129, Jysk). It’s made from weather-resistant poly rattan in a natural beige hue, while the curved shape is subtly decorative to create a relaxed garden space.
Wire frame tables are trending to be more statement due to the airy, modern look of the cage-like structure and the variety of colors and designs available.
Wire frame tables are also available for outdoors – Marks & Spencer’s set of 2 Lois Nest Tables (€64.50 reduced from €129) are particularly good for smaller areas such as balconies as the handy little pair can be neatly pushed on top of each other around to save space. The tables also bring color to a stone patio thanks to their blue-green powder coating.
Grills and fire pits
Stuck on buying a grill this year? Now is an ideal time to invest in grills like the Traeger Timberline Series 850 Pellet Grill (€2,159.10 reduced from €2,399, ARoomOutside.ie).
The Traeger line has been hailed by our grilling experts as “the best all-round grills out there” because the grills use wood pellets instead of charcoal, which burn more evenly to allow for better heat circulation and impart a smoky finish to the grill to improve the taste of the meat.
However, these types of grills tend to be more expensive than the usual charcoal or gas grills. So if you’re considering buying one, it would be wise to gamble on the savings now.
For charcoal grills, Weber’s Kettle is still king. You won’t find big discounts on the best-selling range, but even pennies off can make a difference given this year’s skyrocketing prices – the Master Touch 57cm Charcoal Grill, another choice of shopaholic experts, is now €329 (reduced from €349 €, outdoor.ie).
Another investment grill worth checking out is the Kamado, an egg-shaped ceramic grill derived from the Japanese cooking tradition that mimics wood-fired cooking. This style of grilling has become the appliance of choice among serious grilling enthusiasts, as well as those who would like to add a distinctive design touch to their grill.
Kamado-style grills are definitely on the higher end, but they’re far more versatile than your standard grill, with our experts praising this style of grill for its ability to smoke, roast, sear, and cook pizza, as well as classic grilling.
Take advantage of the summer sales of popular brands like the striking red Kamado Joe Classic (€999 reduced from €2,299, rathwood.com), with a multi-level system that allows you to prepare food at different temperatures at the same time, or the shiny black Buschbeck Kamado XL BBQ grill (€799.95 instead of €1,525, OutdoorFurniture.ie) with continuous cover, grill grate lifter and heat conducting plate.
If you prefer a gas grill, Homebase has a choice in their 50 piece discount offer. Now £200, the Texas Nimbus Six Burner Gas Grill is great for large garden parties – it can cook up to 30 burgers at a time.
If you’re not ready to trade your back garden for the living room just yet, you can stave off the arrival of fall weather with a fire pit, which can help lengthen those evenings outdoors once the chill sets in.
Marks & Spencer has a beautiful half price Madeira fire pit (€199.50 reduced from €399) that features Mediterranean style mosaic detailing around the edge and a black metal frame. The fire pit can be used as an outdoor heater, a coffee table, or even a cooking station.
