17-year-old girl, newborn baby died allegedly due to medical negligence during childbirth

A 17-year-old girl and her newborn baby died in a hospital in the Dominican Republic, prompting the teenager’s family to accuse doctors of negligence.

The girl, identified as Deyanira Morffe, went into labor and was taken to the Manuel de Luna Municipal Hospital in Gaspar Hernández. After the check-ups, the doctors said the delivery would take place on a different date. On the day of the delivery, the doctor assigned to examine her left the facility, Dominican Today reported.

Morffe was then taken to Jamao Al Norte Municipal Hospital in Jamao Al Norte for the delivery. Due to the size of the baby, she was advised to have a cesarean section. However, according to El Caribe, hospital staff forced the girl to give birth naturally [Google Translate].

The girl was unable to cope with the birth and died while being treated at the Ricardo Limardo Hospital in Puerto Plata, where she had been transferred.

According to local media reports, the girl’s family members accused negligence and said medical malpractice led to the deaths.

It remains unclear whether a formal complaint was filed against the hospitals or the doctors. The exact date of the incident is also not known.

No official statement has been released by the hospitals involved in the incident.

Last month, a child aged 1.5 and a half died in India while being treated for burns at a hospital in India. The toddler, identified as Sera Mariya Prince, suffered severe burns after boiled milk fell on her on September 12. Her mother was making tea in the morning when the child hugged her, causing the vessel to slip out of her hand. The hot milk dripped onto the girl, causing burns on the left side of her body. She was taken to a hospital and treated for 15 days before she died. The victim’s father claimed that there was negligence on the part of hospital staff which resulted in the child’s death. The father also filed a complaint against the hospital. Hospital authorities dismissed the negligence claim, saying the child suffered 40% burns.
