Teenager Debanhi Escobar, 18, was photographed April 9 on the notoriously dangerous “death road” to Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, after being abandoned by a taxi driver
The body of a missing student was found on the side of the road two weeks after being abandoned by a taxi driver.
Debanhi Escobar was photographed standing alone earlier this month on a notoriously dangerous stretch of road leading to Nuevo Laredo, Mexico.
The eerie image of the 18-year-old law student in Death Road went viral in the days before her body was discovered in the cistern of an abandoned motel.
Debanhi was out with two friends for the evening when she got into a curbside taxi with a driver identified only as Jesus, aged 47.
He is believed to have been trusted by the group, but for reasons currently unclear, he dropped them off near the US border around 6am on April 9.
The pair are believed to have been involved in a row.
After a 13-day search, her father, Mario Escobar, confirmed that the body of a young woman found on the premises of the Nueva Castilla Motel, a few hundred yards from where Debanhi was pictured, was his daughter.
However, local authorities have yet to confirm the match and DNA testing is currently underway.
On Friday morning, a diving team found the body in the cistern at a depth of about four meters.
The victim’s father said: “My daughter is dead and I don’t know what to do.
“I want to know why Debanhi disappeared.”
News of the teenager’s disappearance gripped Mexico after a photo of her standing by the side of the road after getting out of a taxi was widely shared by local media.
The photo was reportedly taken by the taxi driver and sent to the victim’s friends when they asked him about her whereabouts.
In 2021, 77 people disappeared on the “death road” where Debanhi was last seen.
CCTV cameras filmed Debanhi entering the Alcosa Transportes Internacionales premises shortly after the taxi driver stranded her.
The next morning she was reported missing.
Footage reportedly shows her entering the company premises, but no footage shows her exiting.
Her body was found in the motel’s cistern nearby, between 300 and 500 meters from where she was photographed, on the side of the road.
According to local reports, the driver, who was booked by a friend of the victim, turned off his phone while driving.
He has since been arrested for drug-related offenses, but police also suspect him of being connected to the young woman’s death.
Local media said the taxi driver had been investigated for attempted woman kidnapping and molestation in the past.
The investigations are ongoing.
According to the National Missing Persons Commission, seven women are reported missing in Mexico every day.
