Gas is a very normal part of your digestive system’s daily functioning

It is created when bacteria living in your large intestine break down certain foods.

For example, carbs can take longer to break down and often reach the large intestine undigested.

They can then undergo fermentation, produce air bubbles, and come out as gas.

Swallowing air can also cause bloating, as it enters the digestive tract and is difficult to pass as easily as it should.

Food intolerances can also cause gas trouble – lactose intolerance, for example.

Lactose is not completely absorbed, so it is used by bacteria to make gas.

As the air sacs exit your body, some can build up in your intestines and cause bloating or cramping.

Usually this goes away on its own without any treatment, but there are several methods you can try to ease any symptoms.

Drink probiotics

These can help relieve gas and reduce stomach upset caused by excess gas.

Not all probiotics works the same for everyone, with experts saying it’s hard to figure out exactly which one you should use.

But research has shown that the Bifidobacterium strain is very helpful for releasing excess gas.

Do exercise

It has been proven that exercise reduces feelings of flatulence.

When you’re on the go, your intestines are encouraged to get more gas into your digestive system quickly.

Two methods of practicing the movement of qi include:

  • lying on your back move your legs in a cycling motion
  • take a short walk after eating

Certain yoga poses can really get things moving and change your inner self.

Child’s pose – which involves kneeling on the floor before resting your hands on the floor – is a good pose.

And another is the twist pose – which involves sitting with your legs crossed and turning to one side before repeating the process on the other side.

Some evidence has found that menthol can reduce feelings of constipation, bloating, and excess gas.

This is because mint has antispasmodic properties – preventing your colon from involuntary muscle contractions.

A study published in 2014 found that IBS patient people who have used peppermint oil have seen a real improvement in their stomach upset.

You can control it through capsules, taken an hour before meals – or even mint tea would be helpful after a meal.


Hot compresses can help relieve abdominal pain caused by bloating.

One study found that using a 104-degree Fahrenheit heating pad on the abdomen reduced pain for about an hour.

This is because your body switches on heat receptors, disabling pain receptors.

If none of these work, Jo Webber, Head of Herbal Education at Pukka and former Ayurvedic practitioner told The Sun that you can do other things to reduce bloating.

She recommends using herbs and spices to combat inflammation and bloating.

Jo recommends cardamom, cumin, ginger, turmeric, and cinnamon.

They can be added to foods or taken in herbal teas to help reduce bloating, she says.
