5-year-old boy drowns in sewer after ‘unlocking neighbor’s front door and running away’

The mother of a young boy who drowned in a sewer after he “escaped” from a neighbor’s house has described him as “lovable and caring”.

Madiba Diaby, five, fell into the water in Walsall, West Midlands on Friday.

Despite desperate attempts to revive him, the boy later died in hospital.

His mother Maryam described the incident as a “horrible tragedy”.

She said: “He was a happy boy – always smiling.

“He walked around and hugged everyone. He was a lovely, caring boy. He was never, never a problem.”

Madiba, who had severe speech problems, was reportedly being looked after by neighbors when he unlocked their front door and ran away.

He was found in the canal a few minutes later, The sun reports.

He was treated at the scene in Razorbill Way and then taken to hospital but reportedly died shortly thereafter BirminghamLive.

A West Midlands Police The spokesman described how police officers were able to rescue him from the water, but unfortunately, despite efforts to revive him, he died.

They said: “A child has tragically died after falling down a canal in Bloxwich today (March 4). We were alerted at around 12.15pm that the boy was in the water at Razorbill Way.

“He was pulled from the canal by police officers and despite efforts to revive him, his death was confirmed shortly after his arrival at hospital.

“There are no suspicious circumstances and our thoughts are with his family and the rest of the community at this deeply distressing time.”

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman added: “We were called at 12.16pm to have reports of an incident in the water off Razorbill Way, Walsall.

“Two ambulances, two paramedics, an ICU from Midlands Air Ambulance and Cosford’s Midlands Air Ambulance were on scene.

“Upon arrival we found a child in critical condition. He was treated by paramedics at the scene.

“He was taken to Birmingham Children’s Hospital for further treatment.”
