PLANNERs have approved the final details of an application for 525 apartments in Angmering.
The Arun Borough Council Planning Committee granted delegated approval for the Water Lane project.
The houses, which will be south of the A27, received a general permit in 2019 and the final permit was for the appearance, landscaping and layout of the entire site.
Developers CALA and Bellway Homes will move forward with the project which is expected to deliver a significant proportion of the housing envisaged for Angmering in the local plan.
Previously, there were concerns that the design was “too urban” given the site’s proximity to South Downs National Park.
Now the council’s planning officials believe it fits the area’s design code after “significant discussions” and “independent design advice”.
A previous application allowed construction further north of the site, although the South Downs National Park Authority said it could affect views.
A right of way known as Footpath 2149 will be diverted and upgraded to a bridleway once development occurs.
The municipal council of Angmering contradicted the plans, as did 40 citizens.
Ian Johnson, managing director of Luken Beck, spoke for the developers.
“This reserved application is for 525 high quality, energy efficient and locally distinctive homes, including 159 affordable homes in a truly landscape-focused layout,” he said.
“From the start in May last year, we have adopted the Council’s approach to full public consultation.
“The layout is truly landscape oriented and we see this as a benchmark for sustainable neighborhood design around the national park.”
Mr Johnson said the open space provided under the program will be “double the normal need” with play areas and fitness trails as well as walking and cycling routes and bus services.
