6 Questions for Netki’s Dawn Newton – Cointelegraph Magazine

We ask developers in the blockchain and cryptocurrency space for their thoughts on the industry…and throw in some random zingers to keep them on their toes!

This week tackles our 6 questions Dawn Newton, Co-Founder and Chief Operating Officer of Netki – a remote digital identity verification technology provider designed to facilitate KYC/AML compliance.

Dawn Newton is the Chief Operating Officer and co-founder of Netki, the know-your-customer and anti-money laundering technology provider built specifically for blockchain. Dawn’s work is driven by her desire to increase global access to crypto assets in a sustainable, safe and equitable way. At Netki, Dawn helped develop OnboardID, which facilitates identity verification and onboarding for depot wallets, and TransactID, the only fully compliant solution with the Financial Action Task Force’s travel regulations.

With 30 years of experience leading technical teams and building innovative companies, Dawn has proven to be a world-class operations leader at the forefront of emerging technology industries. From the dawn of the internet to the booming blockchain industry, Dawn’s work has shaped today’s leading technology companies.

1 — If you were to invest in startup companies right now, what type of blockchain-based business opportunity would catch your eye?

I would look at applications that reach as broad a section of the population as possible, preferably from the point of view of inclusion. Ultimately, projects that enable new communities to connect, create and earn are the ones that will have the greatest impact and therefore create the most value in the world.

2 – What is the most innovative blockchain use case you have ever seen? It may not be the one most likely to succeed!

For me, the most innovative use case remains the first one talked about in the early Bitcoin days. Anyone on the planet (who has internet access) has the opportunity to participate in a global financial system that is not owned by any government.

It is an extremely difficult endeavor and I am proud that Netki has been a part of it by being the first nation on the Bitcoin blockchain. Giving 4 million people the ability to transact and receive funds without exorbitant money transmitter fees makes my heart beat faster!

3 — When you tell people you are in the blockchain industry, how do they react?

For laypeople, the first reaction used to be, “OMG, aren’t they all scammers?” Thank goodness that’s happening less and less. I’ve been working in the field of tech innovation for more than 30 years, and as interest in crypto has grown, many of my friends and family have come to me for advice or to better understand the ecosystem.

This curiosity dominates most of the conversations I have today, although I still come across the occasional person who gets all of their information on crypto from Elizabeth Warren. Conversations with these people definitely require a little more effort to untangle all the misleading statements they’ve been fed. Overall, more and more people are getting curious about it, and that’s how we’re changing things!

4 – Tell us about a hidden talent – and give us a link to prove it!

My cooking skills are out of this world (pun on last question). I graduated from Le Cordon Bleu and trained under several Michelin Star chefs in Italy, Japan and the United States. Do you wanna take your chocolate chip cookie Game to the next level?

5- Close your eyes and think of a happy place. What do you see?

Simple, a black volcanic sand beach in El Salvador, great waves, great food – bought with bitcoin of course – and great people.

6 – How do you feel about extraterrestrial intelligence and the existence of life elsewhere in the universe?

I have no opinion as I’m not an expert on the subject, but how amazing would it be to have another life out there and be able to explore it one day in the future!? I grew up with the original star trek Series and absolutely delighted. Imagine my surprise years later when I meet the real Seven of Nine [from Star Trek: Voyager], Jeri Ryan, cooking together at a restaurant in LA, and she becomes my best friend. While I wouldn’t look forward to meeting her as a Borg in real life, I think it would be amazing to be part of a team whose mission is “Seek new life and new civilizations!”.

A wish to the young, up-and-coming blockchain community:

My only wish is WAGMI, and where we land will be spectacular! 6 Questions for Netki’s Dawn Newton – Cointelegraph Magazine
