61ac farm Wicklow Farm, run at €700,000, comprises a derelict Georgian house and carved stone sheds

For many years, family and professional reasons have given me numerous opportunities to visit Co Wicklow.

From Blessington to Roundwood via the Wicklow Gap, the wild and beautiful scenery never fails to amaze and delight at any time of the year.

The village of Hollywood, 7 miles from Blessington, is a key landmark on this hike. Although the site is quite a distance from Glendalough, it has a long association with St Kevin and his monastery.

Over the centuries, many pilgrims passed through the village on their way to the monastic settlement.

Located 1.5 miles from Hollywood, Athgreaney is a quaint, traditional farmhouse on Route 61ac in the Hollywood Glen. Áth na Gréine (the Ford of the Sun) was once a ford across the river Toor Brook.

Lot 61ac is on a block of elevated pastureland

The establishment comprises a two storey traditional Georgian style farmhouse built circa 1880 and a courtyard composed of granite outbuildings.

Two generations of the same family have been successfully raising cattle and sheep in the countryside for over 100 years.

The property comes on the market with a target price of 700,000 euros.

The home is a solid 1,614 square foot building that has been unoccupied for a number of years.

On the ground floor there are two reception rooms, a kitchen and scullery, on the upper floor there are three bedrooms.

The house is Georgian in style and in need of a major refurbishment

According to David Doyle of sales representatives JP&M Doyle, it could use a major makeover but “has the makings of a classic home in a beautiful setting”.

The small, sheltered courtyard of stone houses has its own direct street access.

In various states of repair, a restoration could be undertaken as part of a rural tourism project in an area that attracts many visitors.

The lands are divided into 17 manageable areas bordered by mature hedges with extensive street frontages.

Hill Farm has sweeping views of the countryside including Slievecorragh, Church Mountain, Scalp and Hollywood Glen and west to the N81 Baltinglass Road.

The property will be auctioned in two lots or as a whole.

Both lots are estimated at €350,000: the house and sheds at 11ac; and 50ac country.

The auctioneers report strong interest.

Áth na Gréine (the Ford of the Sun) was once a ford across the river Toor Brook.

“When you consider that a three bedroom mid-terraced house in south Dublin fetches €700,000, Athgreaney Farm represents great value,” said Mr Doyle.

The property will be auctioned at 3pm on Friday 22 April at Lawlors Hotel, Naas, Co Kildare.
