PLAYSTATION 5 owners are reporting that their console is randomly shutting down or going into sleep mode, but there is a fix!

A large number of PS5 players are panicking because their expensive console is broken.

Your PS5 might be shutting down because of something as simple as overheating

Your PS5 might be shutting down because of something as simple as overheating

There are a lot of posts on reddit about PS5s randomly shutting down, as well as going into sleep mode while playing a game or watching something.

I ran into this problem myself, it happens more often and is extremely annoying.

Given how hard it is to find a PS5 these days, a broken one will be hard to replace, but you don’t have to!

Try these simple fixes first – there’s a chance your PS5 keeps shutting down due to some of the issues on this list.

Check the power cable

Starting with the most obvious, before you do anything else check your power cable.

If it is loose or not plugged in properly, it could be the culprit.

It’s likely that the cable is faulty, but try everything else on the list first.

If the problem persists, find an alternative.

Reposition your PS5

Your PS5 needs good ventilation, so if you’ve stashed it in a small hole in the TV stand, give it a new home.

It doesn’t help that the console is an absolute monster and it can ruin the aesthetic of your room if it’s outdoors, but it needs to be.

Try placing it vertically in an open space around or completely outdoors.

You can always clean the fan or remove the faceplates to clean the vents if you don’t want to take out the toolbox.

PS5 Firmware Update

It’s possible that your PS5 isn’t running the latest firmware, which fixes bugs and offers a variety of other improvements.

Usually, you will be told that your control panel needs updating, but you should check it manually, just in case.

First, you need to be connected to the Internet to be able to download any updates.

Go to the ‘Settings’ menu, then select System > System Software > Update and Install System Software.

Select ‘Update system software’, then ‘Update using the Internet’ and ‘Update’.

Turn off Rest Mode

If your PS5 randomly goes into Sleep Mode, you can disable it in the settings menu and that could be a super simple fix.

Go to Settings > System > Power Saver and select ‘Set Time Until PS5 Enters Sleep Mode’.

You will see options for ‘During Gameplay’ and ‘During Media Playback’.

Select ‘Don’t Put In Rest Mode’ for both of these settings.

Use the rear USB ports

There have been reports of a bug related to the PS5’s USB ports – specifically the front panel.

If you’re using an external SSD, need to plug in your headphones, or charge your controller, we recommend using the port on the front panel.

But you should switch to the high-speed USB-A ports on the back.

If you’re having trouble charging your DualSense while in Sleep Mode using the front port, that should fix that problem too.

Disable HDMI device link

Linking HDMI Devices mostly seems to be an issue for users with soundbars but it’s worth a try.

This feature syncs your PS5 with your TV’s power state, so if one device is more idle or turned off, so will the other.

Go to the ‘Settings’ menu, then ‘System’, then ‘HDMI’. Turn off ‘Link HDMI devices’.

Rebuild PS5 Database in Safe Mode

Details Sony’s websiteSafe Mode can “resolve the issue by rebuilding the database that stores the console.”

Your DualSense won’t work wirelessly while you’re doing this, so have a cable ready to connect it.

Your console needs to shut down to start this process, so make sure you’ve powered it off completely.

This process can also take several hours, so choose a time when the control panel will not be used before doing this option, just in case.

When you’re ready to get started, press and hold the power button for about five seconds, releasing once you hear a second beep.

Connect your DualSense controller to the cable and press the PS button on the front panel to wake it up.

Select ‘Clear cache and rebuild database’ from the list of options and wait for it to do its job.

Hopefully working your way through this list will resolve the power off issues.

If it continues to happen after trying everything listed here, the next step is to contact Sony Customer Support.
