A Brighton woman’s horror after finding ants in Asda nectarines

A WOMAN has said she was put off nectarines for life after dozens of ants were watered from the piece of fruit she ate.

Brighton’s Michele Jones has shared the terror she felt as the ‘black dots’ in the nectarine she had just bitten into budding legs multiplied in her hand.

The 67-year-old bought the bag of nectarines from Asda’s shop in Hollingbury on Crowhurst Road on August 12.

The next night she pulled out one of the nectarines to eat, but after one bite she found it tasted “a little weird.”

“I pulled it out of the fridge, rinsed it out and took my first bite,” she said.

“It tasted a little weird.

“I spat it out and saw these little black dots in the bit of nectarine I was chewing.

“And then I looked at the rest of the nectarines and the black dots got bigger and bigger.

“Then I got the shock of my life.

“Legs began to appear on these moving points, and then I realized that these points were ants that had started crawling out from the center where the nucleus was.

“They spread quickly around the nectarine.

“I totally freaked out”

Ms Jones, who is retired, put the ant-infested fruit in a bag and her shock intensified as more and more ants appeared.

“I felt traumatized,” she said.

“There were probably about 60.”

Ms Jones contacted Asda and was promised a £5 e-voucher, which she says she will receive in the future.

An Asda spokesman apologized to Ms Jones and said the company carries out “several” checks to ensure the quality of its products.

“We carry out several checks to ensure the quality of our fresh fruit and vegetables,” he said.

“Unfortunately, there will be instances where insects can ride along due to the nature of fruit grown outdoors.

“We have spoken to Ms Jones to investigate the issue of her voucher not being properly dispatched and our apologies once again.”

Ms Jones said the “traumatic” experience put her off nectarines “for life”.

“I was in shock for quite a while,” she said.

“It was a horrible experience.

“That and the thought of eating or chewing ants freaked me out.

“I vowed to buy cans from now on.

“That obviously put me off nectarines for life – or until I completely forgot that horrible experience.”
