A century late, Olympic athlete Jim Thorpe’s greatness has finally been restored

More than a century late, but better late than never, Olympic rulers have restored Jim Thorpe to his place in sports history. The records he set and the gold medals he won in the decathlon and pentathlon at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics are now official, his alone, 69 years after his death.

As a member of the Sac-and-Fox Nation who grew up in Indian Territory of what would become Oklahoma and started his career in sporting glory at the Carlisle Indian Industrial School in Pennsylvania, Thorpe endured more than his share of humiliation before and after earning the title “World’s Greatest Athlete” at the Summer Games in Sweden. But losing his records and medals was what hurt him the most.
