iliana Sagre, now 92, was appointed to Italy’s upper house in 2018 to mark the 80th anniversary of the passing of that country’s racial laws, which drove her out of elementary school in 1938. She was the only member of her Jewish family to survive imprisonment in Auschwitz, having been deported there from Milan in 1944.
