Chernobyl Children International (CCI) has recruited world-renowned pediatric heart surgeon Dr. Assisted William Novick in entering the war-torn country Ukraine last week to conduct urgent life-saving operations.

r Novick traveled to Ukraine from the United States on a vital mission to operate on children with life-threatening heart conditions such as “Chernobyl Heart.”

Before the Russian invasion of Ukraine, CCI promised families of seriously ill children that they would receive the surgeries they needed to survive. Now the team of volunteer surgeons led by Dr. Novick continued this commitment despite ongoing heavy fighting and increased risks.

CCI Founder and Honorary CEO, Adi Roche, said: “Despite the war, the ‘heart of Chernobyl’ problem has not gone away but has become even more pressing.

“It was imperative for us to have Dr. Assisting Novick in getting him and a planeload of medical supplies and equipment safely to Ukraine.

“For the parents of seriously ill children, it is an absolute miracle to hear that a team can come and perform life-saving surgery. When war broke out, the miracle seemed to have been snatched away. The lives of babies and children with congenital heart defects are at stake, and that hasn’t changed since the catastrophe of war began.

“Thanks to the courage of Dr. However, Novick and his team gave these parents the miracle that was so much needed. In the middle of the war, Dr. Novick the lives of babies and young children,” said Ms. Roche.

dr Novick said he started a call online to put together a team and was “inundated with people wanting to volunteer – the response has been overwhelming”.

“We assembled a great team and traveled to Ukraine on a plane full of medical equipment and supplies,” he said.

The CCI’s heart program and volunteers were “war-hunted” from east to west, according to the organization, and were therefore relocated to the western city of Lviv.

This is now the only safe place for CCI to operate on children in Ukraine after teams were forced to flee Kharkiv due to intensifying Russian bombing.
