A classic by Clint Eastwood that puts Taylor Sheridan on the path to Yellowstone

In an interview with Diversity, Sheridan talks about “Yellowstone” and his inspirations, mentioning a number of famous authors and directors. All of Sheridan’s influences have one thing in common, which is that they all leave a distinct mark on the Western film genre:

“I was greatly influenced by writers like Cormac McCarthy, Larry McMurtry, Toni Morrison, who wrote about the time around the Civil War, obviously very similar themes. There are a lot of Westerners. And in terms of movies that influenced me, he watched ‘Unforgiven’ when I was in my teens or early 20s. Same with ‘Dances With Wolves’, where you’re watching the genre. the West through an entirely new lens that has never been explored before.”

“Unforgiven” remains one of Clint Eastwood’s best works as an actor and as a director. The theme and aesthetic of “Unforgiven” can be seen not only in “Yellowstone”, but also in other works by Sheridan. The same can be said for the works of Cormac McCarthy, whose novels “Blood Meridian” and “The Crossing” have the same sombre and subtle narrative technique as in another of Sheridan’s works, “Wind River”.

Sheridan’s works are completely original, but McCarthy and Eastwood can clearly be considered the blueprints for many of his scripts.
