Where did the idea for Appinio come from?
The idea for Appinio came to our CEO, Jonathan Kurfess, while he was working in the marketing department of one of the top 5 Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) companies. He found that their methods were painfully slow and expensive – the quality of the data was average at best and respondents were not as engaged as they could be, although the incentives and rewards for participation were very enticing. When he shared his ideas on how the company could up their game and bring a much-needed breath of fresh air to market research, they fell on deaf ears.
He quickly learned that the market research industry was broken. Traditional providers were too slow and too expensive to enable companies to use consumer insights in decision-making, while self-service platforms were too simple and lacked critical advisory components. More importantly, both older players and DIY tools used standard panels that provided questionable data, and paying higher incentives didn’t improve quality
So Jonathan decided to finish his internship and start work on what would become Appinio in 2014. Appinio took an entirely new, engaging approach to data collection to provide real-time customer feedback – 1,000 representative responses in less than 30 minutes – with a gamified twist to keep respondents’ intrinsic motivation intact without compromising methodologically correct research. While most customers choose us for our analyzer’s sleek user interface and ability to quickly provide high-quality, reliable data, the main reason they stay with Appinio remains that they love working with our expert consulting team .
How has the company performed during the pandemic?
Appinio has made great strides throughout the pandemic – earlier this year we were recognized as one of the fastest growing companies in Europe by Deloitte Tech’s Fast 50! In terms of headcount, we were a team of 20 people at the beginning of 2020, but now, just two years later, we have over 150 people across four regions – an increase of 650%.
Additionally, we have received no outside funding – no venture capital or private equity – so the business and revenue has grown entirely organically thanks to our strong, dedicated team, powerful platform and happy clients. To date, Appinio has never lost a customer – everyone who used the platform stayed!
What can we expect from Appinio in the future?
As we continue to develop our platform, we will look for different ways to bring new value to our customers. It is important that you are not comfortable, so we will be adding new features and updates to our app – all of which will be described on our website and in our newsletter. We will also increase our efforts to source the best research consultants to ensure we are always one step ahead of the latest market research methods and approaches.
The last few years have been a real learning curve when it comes to our respondents and what drives them. We want to make market research as fun and interesting as possible, so our product team will continue to work on making the app easier to use and more engaging for respondents – after all, motivated respondents make better and more accurate data!
