A conversation with Gaele Lalahy, COO at Menopause App: balance

balance is the largest dedicated menopause app in the world, both in terms of our content library and number of users, as well as the only menopause app in the world certified by ORCHA (the organization that certifies apps for the NHS and other health organisations) has been certified. .

Our mission is to make menopause support inclusive and accessible to all, empowering individuals to receive rapid diagnosis and access the treatment that’s right for them.

The Balance app is free, has been downloaded in over 150 countries and was developed by leading general practitioner and menopause specialist Dr. Founded by Louise Newson. Among other things, it allows users to access personalized content, track their symptoms, connect with a global community of like-minded people, and download a health report to take with them as proof of their doctor’s appointment.

Additionally, in an effort to help people experiencing perimenopause and menopause to take a holistic view of their future health, we just launched balance+, our premium subscription. balance+ offers unparalleled access to the best specialists and clinicians in the field, all coming together to help women optimize their mental health, nutrition, sleep, sexual health and more with classes, video recipes and more. balance+ allows us to fund the rest of the app which, in line with our mission, remains free for everyone.

What do you think makes this company unique?

Without a doubt, our history and our mission.

Our app was born out of the frustration of our founder, Dr. Louise Newson that she couldn’t help everyone who needed her. While treating women for their perimenopause and menopausal symptoms, she realized what a journey they had ahead of them to access the right advice. She saw how regulated body-identical HRT, the first line of treatment recommended by NICE guidelines, changed lives for so many, but she also recognized the enormous task – 48 million women worldwide experience menopause every year.

So she turned the problem on its head and decided to empower the people who needed it most by creating a balance. Since launching in 2020, we’ve had over 500,000 app downloads, more than 250,000 health reports have been downloaded, 87% of users have told us they have self-diagnosed and 69% have received access to treatment.

Rooted in medicine and research, we couldn’t be prouder to have received the Bionow Product of the Year award, which is a recognition from our peers for innovation in biomedical science. We work with the very best academics and professors at the very forefront of knowledge about menopause.

How has the company developed in recent years?

Surprisingly, balance is not even two years old! We are committed to offering more services through our app and now our website, which is the largest medically-approved menopause library in the world with over 2,000 resources on the topic.

We’ve grown our user base in over 150 countries and organically multiplied the number of users we’ve been able to help by 10 since last year and are always thinking of new ways to improve the balance experience.

We have expanded our network of allies and are very proud that our app is used by many GP practices and by the MOD’s medical services as part of their care pathway.

We have also expanded our corporate partnerships with multinational companies to help them create a trusting menopause environment where taboos are broken, employees are trained and individuals are empowered through the Balance app. This is intended to allow them to retain and nurture their female talent and ultimately help organizations achieve parity, particularly in leadership roles. We are passionate about working with them because I can tell you that these organizations can effect change quickly and at scale.

What can we hope for the future of Balance?

We are very happy to have just launched balance+ which after one month already has users in 30 countries. We’re working around the clock to make content more accessible and inclusive for all, and call on any partners interested in joining us to further our mission.

Our commitment to improving women’s health around the world is relentless. Leaving no stone unturned, we are now exploring how we can provide more evidence-based medical information and empower more women across borders in their native language. So expect more innovation and research in the future that this area is crying out for. A conversation with Gaele Lalahy, COO at Menopause App: balance
