A conversation with Melissa Hendry, MD and co-founder of Global Technical Services Provider: ddroidd

Founded in November 2020, droidd is a global technical service provider. With offices in Leeds and Romania we now employ more than 110 people delivering technical projects for clients and agency partners.

As experts in agile digital transformation, complex software development and application management, our approach to software development, improvement and support has allowed us to create and manage websites for some of the biggest brands in the world.

We live by our motto “big enough to specialize, small enough to care”. Our vision is to be the partner of choice that our customers rely on to define, drive and deliver their technical roadmap. We are a people-first company, which means we are open and transparent, putting our people at the heart of our decisions, with health and well-being at the core.

We are also passionate about sustainability and educating people about the environmental impact (electricity consumption) that inefficient websites, digital platforms and technical architectures have in wasting energy. We have developed a groundbreaking A+++ framework, which is a special approach to software development and systems architecture that reduces information reprocessing by up to 90%, reduces a website’s energy consumption, improves reliability and accountability and reduces costs. It is hoped that one day this approach will become the industry standard.

In our first year we surpassed our sales target of £3m and are on track to exceed our second year targets and double.

Today we employ 110 people, we are focused on being an employer of choice by employing, developing and nurturing the best technical professionals in the industry.

Passionate. Committed. Experts. | About Ddroidd

How did you come up with the idea for the company?

ddroidd was born out of a shared love of technology and service delivery. The founding team each has more than 14 years of leadership experience in the IT industry and we were confident in our ability to build and execute our vision together. We knew we wanted to disrupt the market in three ways:

1. Creating sustainable technology solutions – Many companies do not consider the role that web applications play in the environment. We knew we wanted to use our platform and technical know-how to develop and deliver energy-efficient, sustainable software.

2. To be a people-first employer – We wanted to create a company that cares about our employees and their happiness through profits.

3. Empowering Women in Technology – With two out of four founders and directors being women, it was important to us to promote diversity internally and to outperform the market average for women in IT and senior leadership positions. We hire with diversity in mind, ensure cross-section in the disciplines we build, and actively encourage leadership development and mentoring opportunities. Our current male to female ratio is 46% female out of 110 employees, against the market average of approximately 26.2%. We’re proud of the stats and keep pushing toward the 50/50th percentile.

How has the company performed during the pandemic?

We actually started our business in the middle of the pandemic. It has of course brought its challenges, but as it has forced the world to move towards a more digital landscape it has also created opportunities for us as a company.

While there were no in-person meetings or networking events, we maximized online team time and events, set clear goals and roles, and drew on previous relationships when seeking new clients and associates.

As a global company that embodies technology, we were very adept at conducting our day-to-day lives online. We are working entirely remotely and have opened hubs in key areas for our employees who wish to work in an office environment. This has opened up a whole new talent pool for us that is not limited to a specific location.

What can we expect from droidd in the future?

Our vision at ddroidd is not only to be the preferred technical partner for our customers, but also the preferred employer. We will continue to invest in our people and their development and support them on their career path. We will enhance our team benefits with a core focus on health, wellness and experiences to ensure we attract and retain the best talent in the industry.

As an employee-centric company, we don’t focus on what our team can do for our company, but on what we can do for it. This approach results in a much more motivated and productive team working hard to deliver outstanding results for clients.

As part of our second year goals, we aim to double our headcount to 200 employees, with an average hiring of 10 per month. This gives us capacity for new projects and growing customers.

Our A+++ framework, which provides companies with a benchmark for reducing the carbon emissions of their digital platforms, has already started to demonstrate results for clients, with some seeing savings of up to £12,000 per month on hosting bills. We will continue to develop, refine and promote our sustainable technology, which we hope will one day become the industry standard.

To maintain our established reputation as a global provider of technical services, we will continue to develop our technical capabilities by expanding our technical disciplines into Java, Python and Big Data analytics. We are also working to achieve ISO27001 (Information Security) certification.

As a truly global company, we will seek to expand our footprint to five geographically independent locations with two new offices. A conversation with Melissa Hendry, MD and co-founder of Global Technical Services Provider: ddroidd
