How did you come up with the idea for the company?

I worked at an HRTech startup as a software engineer that scaled from less than 10 employees to 50+ employees in 2 years and it was during this period of growth that I first came across the idea for Haystack.

With ambitious plans to double the engineering team, the CEO said to me, “Mike, one of the hardest things about growing a company is putting bums on seats.” This got me thinking, how could a company with a great culture, amazing employee benefits, exciting technology and an interesting product Having trouble hiring tech talent? At this point I was hooked.

I tried tirelessly to get to the bottom of the problem and it turned out to be two things. For companies, unfair recruitment fees, shady practices, biased job boards, and noisy social media platforms meant it was virtually impossible to organically promote your employer brand and get exposure to your target audience, leaving recruiters with a monopoly in localized technology markets. For tech talent, a lack of employer transparency, tracking by recruiters, and poorly matched job listings meant your ideal employer was often hiding in plain sight without you even noticing.

How has the company performed during the pandemic?

Haystack launched in the middle of the pandemic. Thinking about building and growing a business has been an enormous challenge, let alone creating a positive work culture with a bunch of people you hardly ever met in person. We worked very hard during the interviews to select candidates based not only on their technical skills and know-how, but also on their cultural fit and values.

Our office has always been a great place to be, but we understand it’s not for everyone. We have a fully flexible working policy, which means people can work from anywhere, whenever they want – they’re trusted to make the best decisions for them and it has stayed that way since day one.

What can we expect from Haystack in the future?

Haystack is already trusted by some of the UK’s largest and most exciting tech employers. Having started in the North East we are rapidly expanding our user base across the UK and expect to be available across Europe and America very soon.

We plan to double the number of people on the team within 12 months and ramp up our internal processes to allow for easy scaling.

Instead of technicians automatically going to traditional recruitment platforms, they will go to Haystack to look for new opportunities.
