Prosecutor Rachel Knight said Vowles managed to escape from the rubble on Coryton intersection in Cardiff – but Danielle was dead.

She said: “The slide is 250m long and bends to the left, the top meets the main gym system, where there are traffic lights.

“The light shows red for 14 seconds when the defendant is moving toward them at 62 to 64 mph.”

Cardiff Crown Court heard roadside camera footage showed Vowles not slowing down as he approached the lights.

The vehicle then veered off the side of the road before swerving across two lanes, crashing into a barrier and darting through the air.

Ms Knight said: ‘He was driving in a straight line without trying to brake.

“He collided with the impact barriers with such speed and force that they were completely destroyed.”

The vehicle was still traveling at about 43mph in the air before crashing into large trees and landing on its roof 75 feet ahead.

Mother-of-four Danielle was left “cocooned” in the car while fastening her seat belt while Vowles stepped over to the A470’s stiff shoulder.

Vowles had nine points on his license at the time of the November 2020 crash – and was not wearing a seat belt. Blood tests showed he was five times over the legal limit for drugs after testing positive for cocaine.

The court said the couple was staying at the Park Inn hotel when guests complained about noise coming from their room.

They checked out at 3.43am before driving down the road at “extremely fast” in heavy rain.

The court heard text messages revealed Vowles had asked to receive cocaine from an agent at 4:21 a.m.

After the collision, Vowles ejected himself from the vehicle and knocked out a lorry driver at 4:30 a.m. local time.

He lied to the police and testified that there were four people inside the vehicle at the time of the accident.

In a victim impact statement, Angela Morgan said: “Danielle is a vivacious and intelligent young woman.

“Danielle put her trust in Andrew Vowles when she got into the van with him that night but he betrayed her trust.”

Defender Owen Williams said Vowles “really regrets” his actions.

He said: “He knows that he has ruined lives and has taken one.”

Judge Richard Williams jailed Vowles for seven years and six months for causing death by dangerous driving.

He said: “It can’t be said that there is real remorse in this case as opposed to self-pity. This is clearly the most dangerous case of driving possible.”

Vowles, of Caerphilly, South Wales, is also banned from driving for eight years and nine months – and will have to take an extended driving test.

CPS’ Leighton Mawer said: “Andrew Vowles made the decision to drive the way he did and takes responsibility for what happened. It was his actions that caused a young woman to take her life tragically.

“Our thoughts remain with Danielle’s family and friends, who have suffered a terrible loss.”
