A fan makes the Metroid 64 game that never was
A fan shared his opinion on what a Metroid The game might have looked like this if it had come out on the N64.
The Metroid series had some 3D entries on the GameCube and Wii, but Nintendo skipped a generation in the transition from the SNES to the N64. But ultimately none was ever actually released on the N64, so one fan and indie developer decided to make his own idea of what a Metroid could look like on the classic console.
Luto Akino is an indie game developer from Mexico who is currently working on a variety of projects, but they also recently shared some gameplay from Metroid 64, the fan game not developed at all by Nintendo. The environments on the back certainly look like they’re straight out of an N64 game, and they also fit with the general moody and scary atmosphere in the Metroid series.
It also sees Samus running, jumping, and rolling through the location, although it’s currently just a small, simple location. A shooting mechanic is also present, which appears to have some sort of lock-on, obviously necessary for a console that only has an analog stick. It’s a really cool early version of a potential N64 version of Metroid, so it’s probably worth keeping an eye on to see how it fares.
A recent interview with series creator Yoshio Sakamoto confirmed that he had been trying to figure out how to make a Metroid game for the N64, but it just didn’t feel right. “I actually thought about the possibility of making a Metroid game for N64, but I felt like I shouldn’t be the one making the game,” Sakamoto said. “When I held the N64 controller in my hands, I just couldn’t imagine how Samus could be moved with it. So it was just too early for me to do a 3D Metroid personally at the time.”
At least now Sakamoto doesn’t have to think about how to get Metroid on the N64.
