A giant sperm whale was seen hurtling down a motorway while stunned drivers looked on in shock.

The 12 meter long animal was seen tied to the back of a flatbed truck on a section of the M62 yesterday.

Concerned drivers wondered what on earth was going on as the giant whale was being transported along the busy road near Junction 38 to North Cave in the East Riding of Yorkshire around 3pm.

One person took to Twitter with a video of the mammoth and said: “Watch out for sperm whales on the M62 #motorwhale.”

However, the mystery was soon solved.

It is believed that the whale was a very realistic fake. For the past fortnight a replica whale has been on display as an art installation at Redcar on Teesside and more recently at Whitehaven, Cumbria.

The same whale was also sighted on the A1 two weeks ago, HullLive reports.

The Whale is a creation by Belgian artist group Captain Boomer Collective, who specialize in creating location-based shows that explore the boundaries between reality and fiction.

The whale art installation, simply titled ‘Whale’, features a replica of a 12 meter long Sperm Whale ‘stranded’ on the shore. Artists play the role of scientists conducting an autopsy.

Installed in each location overnight, the whale emits the smell of decomposition, further enhancing the sense of realism. The art installation aims to stimulate a discussion about pollution and the environment.

Captain Boomer Collective said of the show, “The beached whale is a giant metaphor for the disruption to our ecosystem. People feel disturbed in their connection to nature. The play between fiction and reality reinforces this sense of disruption.”

The whale has previously surfaced in Greenwich, Paris and Madrid.
