A highly artistic horror performance [Fantastic Fest]

Since both main characters work in the art world, Stevens ‘loads into his film strange, dynamic, artistic images – the bird people; mystical-like numbers; doll mask. It all adds up to the creepy atmosphere – when the characters (I won’t tell anyone, I’m not a spoiled monster) begin to see the artistic nightmare imagery, it all feels overwhelming. strange, so different, it took me by surprise. Enhanced by the intentionally grainy 16mm footage, “A Wounds Fawn” is a visually good piece of work.

Ruben creates a unique combination of protagonist and villain. Much of the movie is from his POV, which means we’re stuck with him as our protagonist even though we know he’s a serial killer. We find ourselves both feeling a bit sorry for the character and hoping he gets his bloody, well-deserved reward. To be honest I’m not a fan of Steven’s previous movie, “The Girl on the Third Floor” which has a similar theme. But “A Wounds Fawn” is a giant leap forward for the filmmaker; proof that he is for real and that he has a unique voice in the world of indie horror.

As the world of “AW being Fawn” grows more alien, more and more terrifying, I am mesmerized by the nightmare of it all. Again, the plot may feel similar to other titles you’ve seen, but I assure you the movie itself is completely unique and amazing. And the lesson couldn’t be clearer: don’t follow Josh Ruben to a second location, because that won’t do any good.
