Around 40 firefighters battled a massive blaze that broke out on a rooftop terrace on The Mall in Stratford, central London, with firefighters expected to remain on site throughout the night
Firefighters have been battling a huge blaze that has destroyed a rooftop restaurant at London’s Stratford shopping mall.
Footage shows flames lighting up the night sky as the fire is well established on the roof of the five-story building on Friday night.
London Fire Brigade said six fire engines and around 40 firefighters were battling the blaze at The Mall restaurant in Stratford.
It said that “most of a rooftop restaurant was on fire.”
No injuries have been reported so far.
Station Commander Dave Hill, who was on site, said: “One of the brigade’s 32-metre aerial ladders was used as an observation tower, allowing crews an aerial view of the incident and helping to improve situational awareness.
“The lighting function was also used on the turntable ladder to support crews when working in the dark.”
The fire has since been brought under control but firefighters are expected to remain on site throughout the night and into the morning.
The fire department specified : “Six fire engines and about 40 firefighters fought a fire at a rooftop restaurant on The Mall in Stratford.
“Most of an open-air restaurant on the roof of a five-story building caught fire. There are currently no reports of injuries.
“The brigade’s 999 control officers took 17 calls to fire.”
The fire department said the cause of the fire is currently being investigated.
It said: “Firefighters are expected to remain on site tonight. The Great Eastern Road is closed in both directions.
“The brigade was called at 00:07 and the fire was under control at 00:51. Fire crews from Stratford, Leytonstone, Poplar, Leyton and Bethnal Green fire stations were on site.
“The cause of the fire is being investigated.”
