“A landmark step” – The National Women’s Council welcomes the introduction of free contraceptives for women aged 17-25

Free contraception for women aged 17 to 25 is due to go into effect this week, representing a significant financial saving.

Omens of this age are entitled to free prescriptions as well as free consultations with their GP.

The measure was promised by Health Secretary Stephen Donnelly and follows consultations with GPs about the fees they will be paid to provide the service.

As part of the program, which will cost around 25 million euros to fund, women aged 17 to 25 can obtain contraceptives free of charge from a doctor or pharmacist.

The cost of birth control pills and similar contraceptives that require repeated prescription are estimated at 65 to 100 euros per six months.

The initial cost of a long-acting reversible contraceptive, including advice, purchase of the device and fitting, is typically between €250 and €320. If the moving costs are added, the costs rise to 340-470 euros.

The new system will cover the full cost of prescription contraceptives, including the cost of necessary consultations with physicians to discuss appropriate options with the individual patient.

It covers the cost of applying or removing different types of long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs) and any necessary checks by healthcare professionals certified to perform the work.

These include birth control injections, implants, IUS and IUDs, the patch and ring, and various forms of oral contraception, including emergency contraception.

The National Women’s Council (NWC) said it very much welcomes the launch of the program.

Alana Ryan, NWC Women’s Health Coordinator, said: “This is a game-changing move. Universal free contraception is a public health intervention with transformative potential and key to gender equality.

“Some women are sexually active before age 17 and well after age 25. So it is crucial that the government follows up on this excellent first step with expanding the age bracket in the household.”
