A large crowd gathered for an anti-abortion demonstration in the city of Dublin, which organizers said was intended to call for alternatives to abortion to be included in an ongoing review of new Irish laws.
Three years after the liberalization of strict abortion laws, an independent review of abortion benefits in Ireland is ongoing.
This gave women legal access to abortion during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy and later in the pregnancy in cases where the life of the woman is at risk or where there are fatal fetal abnormalities.
As part of the new laws, a review of abortion benefits was due three years after their introduction.
The review is carried out by the independent chair Dr. Catherine Conlon directed.
Organizers said the March for Life demonstration should call for “all perspectives” to be included in the review and for increased support for women experiencing unplanned pregnancies.
People carried blue, pink, green and white balloons and signs with slogans such as “Abortion Betrays Women”, “Abortion Is Murder” and “Support Mothers and Babies”.
Some of the signs related to the US Supreme Court’s decision earlier this year to overturn the landmark Roe v Wade ruling that overturned the US constitutional right to abortion.
This was welcomed by anti-abortion groups and prompted pro-choice activists in Ireland to hold demonstrations outside the US embassy in Dublin.
Saturday’s demonstration on Molesworth Street was organized by the Pro Life Campaign.
