The 1990s version of “The Sandman” eventually died an euthanasia, but there was still a brief glimmer of hope for the project’s success when Jackson expressed interest. Jackson – popular beyond belief at the time – has always been a fan of comics, and even toyed with the idea of buying Marvel Comics in the ’90s. In his music videos, Jackson often gives himself a credit. I am talented enough to develop superpowers. The leap into playing Dream isn’t as far-fetched as it seems. Until the early ’90s, Jackson was known in the public eye for being a wealthy dude with a personal amusement park and exotic pets. Gaiman recalled hearing the news of Jackson’s interest from Warner Bros., speak:
“By 1996, I was taken to Warners, where the then-president of Warner Bros. sat me down and told me that Michael Jackson had called him the day before and asked him if he could. playing Morpheus in The Sandman. So a lot of people were interested in this and they knew it was one of the crown jewels and what was I thinking? And I said, ‘Ooh.’
Of course, this idea may have cooled because in 1993, Jackson was publicly accused of sexually assaulting a 13-year-old boy. The case was resolved in 1994, but the scandal was too notorious to be ignored. One can only speculate that that’s why the Michael Jackson version of “The Sandman” never appeared.
