A major utility is giving away free electric blankets to keep its customers warm while gas and electric bills soar to all-time highs.

Octopus Energy is distributing 5,000 blankets to those most in need as the cost of living crisis hits Brits.

Uswitch says it would cost 28p to use an electric blanket for an hour a night – over a week that would cost £1.96.

Actual amount varies by plan, blanket used, and length of use.

Many have praised the company for the move on social media, with the blankets listed at £40 on Amazon.

“A big thank you for the electric blanket,” said one customer on Twitter.

“Being in a power chair 24/7 – I feel the cold more and have little space to warm up, and this useful gift will warm me up.”

Another said: “Perfect timing on such a cold day! Thanks very much.”

Octopus had 5,000 blankets to distribute and said “stocks are very low”.

To get their free blanket, customers can use the company’s online help tool, which can also help them with other questions.

Blankets will be prioritized for those most financially needy based on how many Octopus are left.

Octopus’ freebie was well-received, but other energy suppliers have been criticized for their energy-saving tips.

Ovo was criticized last year for telling struggling customers to star jump or cuddle a pet to keep warm.

The bills have skyrocketed by millions since the start of this month and the new fiscal year, with an increase in the Social Security tax, unprecedented fuel costs and inflation.

But by far the biggest hit has been the increased price cap on energy bills, with regulator OFGEM raising the cap to £1,971 from April 1.

The move means the average UK household energy bill will increase by almost £700 a year.

Experts have warned it will push millions into poverty and force them to choose between heating and eating.
