A man (60) was airlifted to hospital after a tractor overturned in Co Longford

A man in his 60s was flown to hospital this afternoon after the tractor he was driving overturned in Co Longford.

The injured man is believed to have suffered serious leg injuries as a result of the incident, which took place just after 11am on the outskirts of Granard.

The man, who is from the area, is believed to have returned to his home after attending the 2022 Co Longford Plowing Championships, held in the town of North Longford.

Emergency services rushed to the scene and managed to extricate the man before he was flown to Tallaght University Hospital for treatment.

A Gardaí spokesman said: “Gardaí and emergency services were visiting the scene of a traffic collision involving a single vehicle that occurred at approximately 11:10am today Sunday 27 March 2022 in the Granardkill area of ​​Granard, Co Longford.

“A man was flown to Tallaght University Hospital for treatment of injuries sustained as a result of this incident.

“The road involved in this collision is currently closed while the scene is attended to.

Local Cllr PJ Reilly said the injured man was a respected member of the local community and said locals were shocked by the news.

“He was just after he was out at the Plowing Championships to turn in a piece of machinery and was on his way out to get something else when it happened,” he said.

“It is terribly unfortunate that something like this can happen on a day when everyone is enjoying themselves and enjoying a fabulous occasion and our thoughts and prayers are with him.”

It was the first time the annual agricultural showcase has been held in Longford after two years of coronavirus restrictions.
