A man who was left without a nose or ears after a horrific incident claims he was denied his driving theory test because he “didn’t match his ID”.

Darren Harris, 29, from Middlesbrough, was fighting for his life in hospital last year when he was electrocuted by 11,000 volts while exploring the city.

Against all odds, he survived the ordeal but was left “severely disfigured,” without a nose or ears and with scars covering 47 percent of his body.

But Darren said he was in tears after experiencing “disgusting discrimination” when told he couldn’t take his theory test because he didn’t look like the photo on his ID that was taken before the incident.

Despite having passed the test twice previously “without a problem”, Darren made a third attempt to pass at the Northallerton B test center when he claimed the manager asked him to take off his hat.

He told the Mirror: “I walked away absolutely desperate with a big lump in my throat. I cried my heart out.

“He said, ‘It’s not my problem that you shouldn’t have changed your appearance, you haven’t changed your identification’.

“I said I’m not ready to change my identity because I’m still coming to terms with my new look, but he was really awkward with me.

“I feel highly discriminated against.

“There was even another boy there trying to help me, he said to him listen, you can see the man is trying, he has his bank card, his ID and proof that he has passed his test previously existed, why are you rejecting him and the guy? said ‘because his face doesn’t match his ID’.”

Former scaffolder Darren claims the dispute at the center started when the manager told him to take off his hat for the test.

But since his accident, Darren has used hats to hide his appearance, sometimes even to bed, and claims he has had no trouble wearing a hat during his last two Tests.

Darren said: “I sleep in my hat, I wear my hat all day, even around the house.

“I told him you can’t expect me to be in there in front of a crowd of strangers with my bare head on display.

“I had severe trauma and a lot of burns to my head. He said ‘It’s not my problem mate, you won’t take your test then’.

“I asked him ‘why are you so hard on me’ and brought up my old pictures.

“I said, ‘There’s the face I was born with but unfortunately it was taken away from me 18 months ago, can’t you see I’m trying to give you everything to prove who I am’.

“But he had neither compassion nor remorse.”

Darren was in a coma for 27 days and underwent 23 surgeries after his arms were completely debrided following his accident in November 2021.

He survived sepsis, multiple organ failure, and had a craniotomy to relieve the pressure on his brain.

But after his release, Darren had to overcome a mental battle and had suicidal thoughts because of his new looks and scars.

He said: “I don’t like going out at best and I came out, took a train journey to do so and when I was refused to take the test I’m absolutely disgusted.”

The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency told the Mirror it was investigating the incident.

A spokesman said: “The DVSA will urgently investigate this incident with their theory test provider.

“We always strive to treat all candidates with respect. We apologize for the distress caused and will be in touch with the individual to offer a retest.”
