A man who was cut in half by a forklift begged the doctor to save him, even if it was only a head

Sabia Reiche, 23, recalled how her Montana husband Loren Schauers, 20, pleaded to be kept alive despite the risks after his body was severed by a forklift

A man cut in half by a forklift has urged his family to keep him alive, even if he’s just a “head on a plate”.

Loren Schauers, 20, was working in the forklift on a bridge when he fell 50 feet in September 2019, severed his arm and crushed his lower body.

His family faced the devastating decision of whether to ask the doctors to save him by cutting him in half and risking making Loren wish they hadn’t.

But when the construction worker was able to speak for himself later, he looked the doctors “dead in the eye” and asked for the life-saving operation.

Loren, from Great Falls, Montana, USA, has been living without his legs and right forearm for two years with the help of his devoted wife, Sabia Reiche, 23.

The couple have shared aspects of their life on Youtube where they have garnered a massive following that is approaching half a million subscribers.

Sabia spoke about how family doctors told the only way to save her boyfriend was to amputate everything below his belly button in a procedure known as a hemicorporectomy.

“We were all super shocked and none of us knew how to react and none of us knew how Loren was going to react because he’s an 18-year-old guy living life to the fullest,” she said Daily Star.

Loren underwent surgery to remove his lower body

“And so there was a fear in our minds that he wouldn’t want this surgery or that he would rather die than lose half his body.

“But his sister fought really hard to let him make that decision.”

The surgery resulted in the removal of Loren’s genitals as his pelvis had been completely shattered.

Sabia explained that prior to the surgery, Loren’s mother was his power of attorney and didn’t know what decision to make.

“She didn’t know if she should have the surgery and if he should wake up and hate her for it or not have the surgery and he died and she felt like she killed her son,” she added.

“So his sister fought really hard to get him off the ventilator so he could make the decision.

“After a day or two of deliberations and talks, they took him off and he woke up and kind of had an inkling of what was going on.”

Doctors told Sabia that Loren would not survive, and she said goodbye to him six times, fearing the worst

Sabia said Loren was aware something terrible was happening to his body when he woke up in the hospital.

The brave woman recalled surgeons telling him, “You’re going to lose the lower half of your body or you could die in the surgery.”

She added: “From that moment I knew he wasn’t going anywhere because he looked them dead in the eye and told them he didn’t care if he was just a head on a plate, they were going to do the surgery and you will keep him alive.

“It really gave us a lot of hope that he was a fighter, but we already knew that because he was alive.”

Sabia stayed by Loren’s side after the nightmare accident and during his health struggles.

She has to do many everyday tasks for him, including changing his colostomy bags and taking a shower.

To make life easier for both of them, the couple asks for donations to fund a new bionic arm for Loren.

Sabia previously hit out at trolls asking how the couple had sex, saying the question was disrespectful.

“One question we get asked all the time is how do we have sex and how do we get intimate,” she said.

“This is a very personal question that we will never answer or allude to as it is very disrespectful.

“You wouldn’t ask a random couple on the street how they have sex, and just because our circumstances are different doesn’t give people the right to ask.”
