A marker in honor of Jackie Robinson has been defeated. MLB helped replace it.

He then added: “The association of guns and violence against African Americans in this country is one that has been going on for a long time. And so the fact that they shoot these markers with guns is a signal that is sent in some way. “

(The Grady County Sheriff’s Office did not return messages seeking comment.)

Recycling and installing new markers costs thousands of dollars. Know the 2021 All-Star Game is coming up in suburban Atlanta (before it was moved to Denver under Georgia’s voting laws), Groce said the historic society has contacted MLB about collaborating on a new Robinson marker. MLB has donated $40,000, he said, to not only cover the cost of a new aluminum birthplace marker, but also add a second one — at the Roddenbery Memorial Library in downtown Cairo, a more commercial area directs people to their birthplace 13 miles south – and sets up a fund to keep them afloat.

April Brown, MLB’s vice president of social affairs, says the effort will last forever because “we want to make sure it’s something that lasts forever.”

“Sometimes people look at things like, ‘Oh, that’s just a physical signboard,'” she said. “But what it stands for is how we can empower communities and audiences around social justice, while empowering and uplifting those who have fought for the rights of all.”

Brown called it “deeply heartbreaking” for Robinson and others to lose points. But she also sees this as an opportunity to call attention to the fact that vandalism against minorities is still happening.

“It’s still a sign that our country needs to go further,” she said. “It is unfortunate that whoever the individual or the individual is, they feel they need to take it away from something iconic and to a man who has left such a legacy in baseball and in the world. America.”

The new Robinson markers were installed by local authorities on Wednesday. Local politicians, MLB representatives from New York, Groce and Walden, among others, will gather at the public library on Friday morning to redo the markers. (A new Turner marker was installed and reused in December.)
