IF YOU want to delete your WhatsApp messages after sending, look away now.

The US chat app is reportedly testing a feature that could allow its users to save chats before they are permanently deleted.

Analysis of a recent beta shows that the messaging app, owned by Facebook parent company Meta, could introduce the feature in a future update, according to the tech site WABetaInfo.

The “saved messages” feature would effectively eliminate the app’s popular “disappearing messages” setting.

This tool allows users to automatically self-destruct their messages after sending them.

Users can set messages to disappear after 24 hours, 7 days, or 90 days depending on your settings.

But the potentially upcoming update would allow users to choose some messages to keep intact rather than biting the bullet.

While disappeared messages would be removed from the chat, they would be saved in a separate folder that can be viewed at any time.

All members of the given conversation can view held messages unless an admin chooses otherwise.

In group chats, the admin reportedly has ultimate power over whether messages can disappear or be kept.

A screenshot of a beta version of the Whatsapp desktop app shows an option that reads “Anyone can keep or unchat messages. Group admins can restrict this.”

WABetaInfo first reported on the Saved Messages feature in July, but released an update this week.

It appears that WhatsApp is working on a way to ensure that people who want to remove their own messages can do so freely.

The tech site shared a screenshot from the latest WhatsApp beta with a warning saying it’s not possible to keep a missing message.

According to WABetaInfo, authors of disappearing messages can later choose to remove them from the kept messages folder.

This ensures that no one else in the conversation can view it or save it for later.

This addition means that the authors of the disappearing message still have ultimate control over who – if anyone – sees it.

It may allay fears that the saved messages folder might make disappearing messages obsolete.

WABetaInfo says it’s unclear when the keepd messaging feature will be released as it’s still under development.

Disappearing messages is said to improve privacy and save storage space on devices.
