A mind-blowing optical illusion reveals how your brain is lying to you.
With two photos of a bridge, TikTok users beatonthebeeb explains the illusion and the trick our mind plays on us.
The user, also known as Dean Jackson, initially shows a black and white photo of the bridge.
Then he shows the same image but with a filter over it giving it a psychedelic tint.
The illusion expert, who has 600,000 TikTok followers, asks viewers to stare at a white circle in the center of the scenery.
Then he switches back to the black-and-white photo, which the viewer perceives in color through brain trickery.
“The psychedelic colors are designed to tire the receptors at the back of the eye,” he says in the video, uploaded April 25.
“If I remove them, only those needed to color the picture should be stimulated.”
The result is that the brain lies to your eyes by telling you the photo is full color when it isn’t.
The moment you take your eyes off the white dot in the center of the image, it goes back to black and white.
The key is to keep the focus on the white circle while the eyes adjust.
“Whatever you do, always look squarely in the center of that circle,” beatonthebeeb says.
“Keep your phone at a constant distance. Keep your eyes focused. Don’t get distracted.
“When your eyes move, the color is lost.”
Optical illusions are often just a bit of fun, but they also have real value for scientists.
The brain puzzles help researchers shed light on the inner workings of the mind and how it reacts to its environment.
dr Gustav Kuhn, a psychologist and human cognition expert at Goldsmiths University in London, told the Sun earlier this month that illusions are important to our understanding of the brain.
“We usually take perception for granted and rarely think about the hard work that underpins everyday tasks, like seeing a cup of coffee in front of you,” he said.
“Visual illusions highlight perceptual errors and provide important insights into the hidden neural processes that allow us to see the world around us.”
It follows the release earlier this month of a spooky illusion that makes viewers feel like they’re falling into a black hole.
