The original 2014 version was directed by Franz and Fiala, who seem to have blessed this new version of the story. However, I’m not sure I see the caliber of filmmaking on display in this new trailer as I did in the trailer of the original movie, which I revisited shortly after seeing the new one. The trailer for the Austrian film, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival in the year of its release, is unsettling and downright creepy even though it really makes very little of the few minutes of screen it gives you. .
The mother’s gestures combined with her cold figure and demeanor are what really take over and send chills down your spine in the original trailer, especially since the sneak peek doesn’t have a lot of dialogue in it. . But with the Prime Video version, the stakes feel significantly lower, and Watts is hardly the horror of a changed mother of which Susanne Wuest was the original mother. Watts has changed, yes; Her sons noticed that she became more interested in smoking in the bathroom and delegating house rules than giving them the love and affection they were accustomed to from her. But she’s not cold, not cold in any way. The tone is completely missing on this second attempt. Of course, it remains to be seen how the full movie lives up to the original, as this is just a trailer – but so far, it doesn’t look promising.
“Goodnight Mommy” will be streaming on Prime Video on September 16, 2022.
When twin brothers (Cameron and Nicholas Crovetti) arrive in their mother’s hometown (Naomi Watts) and discover her face is covered in bandages – the result of recent plastic surgery – they immediately feel like something is wrong. She sets new rules in the house, smokes in the bathroom, and secretly tears up a drawing they gave her — things their loving mother would never do. As her behavior became increasingly bizarre and erratic, a horrifying thought took root in the boys’ minds: Suspicion deepened that the woman was lying under the bandages, who was foraging and sleeping. in the next room, not their mother.
