A New James Bond Won’t Be Picked Until He Has A Villain To Fight

When asked how the next Bond film might reflect “social changes”, Broccoli said such things are always on her mind when it comes to the character:

“We always sit down with our writers, and we start by thinking what the world is afraid of? We start by thinking ‘Who’s the Bond villain?'”

Fleming’s original Bond stories were a product of the Cold War, and in the earliest times Bond fought Soviet intelligence. SMERSH. When Daniel Craig took on the role of 007 in “Casino Royale,” the fear of the post-9/11 world was terrorists. So the villain of that movie, Le Chiffre (Mads Mikkelsen), is a sponsor for them. However, according to Broccoli, politics isn’t the only thing that makes up a Bond villain:

“We try to focus on that as a kind of uber story, and then we want to look at Bond’s love life, and what he’s going to face personally that he’s never had to deal with. So he has two big issues in the film – one is geopolitical and the other is personal.”

The last few Bond films leaned heavily on the personal conflict side of things; Raoul Silva (Javier Bardem) in “Skyfall” is a dark mirror image of Bond while Blofeld (Christoph Waltz) in “Spectre” is reimagined as Bond’s adopted brother. Comments on the state of surveillance have fallen to the sidelines. “No Time To Die” is also more concerned with tragedy than with sociology, despite the random reflections of the real world; Safin (Rami Malek) is a bioterrorist in a movie released during a global pandemic.

If the right balance between geopolitical and personal strife is key to a great Bond villain, restoring that balance in the sequel will be key.
