A quarter of a century after his death, much of Jim Kemmy’s vision for Ireland is now a reality

Four times a day for 15 years I walked past “the dead, the mad and the bad” in Limerick City on a school route that passed the city cemetery, psychiatric hospital and prison.

Tube walks up and down Mulgrave Street were interspersed with endless funerals, regular chats with the hospital’s patients on walks, and sometimes even exchanges with prison staff and the inmates working in the flower garden.
