nis Cealtra or Holy Island in Lough Derg is one of Ireland’s most famous monastic sites.

Visitors come to see the well-preserved round tower and the ruins of six churches. However, the main monument that attracts couples is the negotiation stone. It is believed that this low boulder with a hole in the middle was where the monks did business by shaking hands through the stone. Today, married couples come here to renew their vows and maybe start new business themselves.

A house in Birr built in 1978 was named after the island. Set behind a stone wall and wrought iron gates, Inis Cealtra lives up to its name by being a home away from home in a secluded and peaceful spot in the city. Oxmantown Mall has remained quite an exclusive address since it was built in 1810 for the city’s nobility.

However, locals will remember the house as the family practice of the late Dr. Grealy remember. Although now owned by another family, there is still evidence of the waiting room and surgery, with its own entrance on one side of the house. This could easily be converted into self-contained accommodation for an elderly relative or young adult looking for some independence.

With a floor area of 2,530 m², although in need of modernization, the house has been well maintained over the years. To the left of the hallway is the living room which leads into a conservatory. Straight ahead is the dining room with sliding doors into the kitchen which has a solid fuel Aga. Next to the kitchen there is a utility room and a guest toilet. At the front of the house is a study overlooking St. Brendan’s Church across the street. Behind it is the old operating room.
Upstairs are four bedrooms (master ensuite) and a family bathroom.

Inis Cealtra is being offered for sale via Donal Boyd Auctioneers (057) 912 0263 at a guide price of €800,000.
