Preston, four, was disappointed when he lost his birthday bonus at Tesco

A little boy broke down in tears after losing all his birthday money at Tesco – but then a kind stranger stepped in to save the day.

Preston was celebrating his fourth birthday and had a whopping £15 to spend, so his mum took him to her local Tesco so he could get a new toy Hull Live reports.

He chose a miniature helicopter and went to the checkout, but disaster struck when Preston’s money disappeared somewhere in the store and it was nowhere to be found, even though he retraced her steps.

The little boy, from Hull, Yorkshire, was brought to tears as he watched staff put the toys back on the shelves – then a kindhearted stranger stepped in and gave Preston a fresh £20 for his birthday.

His mum Karen said: “I was following my tracks but couldn’t find the money, then this very kind lady asked my son what was going on.

“Preston said it was his birthday and he lost his money for his helicopter. The lady then pulled out her handbag and handed my son a £20 note and said ‘go get your plane’.”

Karen said the act of kindness from a complete stranger nearly brought her to tears and made her son’s day. Preston immediately stopped crying and thanked the woman with a hug. Karen also thanked the woman, whose name she didn’t know at first.

Wanting to thank her again, Karen later tried to track her down via social media and posted an appeal online, prompting Donna, the kind-hearted stranger, to come forward.

Donna, who declined to give her middle name, said that when she saw him crying, helping Preston came naturally to her.

She said: “I could tell it was his birthday as he had a badge on. I asked him what was going on and he told me he lost his money on his birthday. His mother said it must have fallen out of his bag at the supermarket.

“The lady at Tesco tried to help and the mother looked around the shop for it. I asked how much he lost and he said 15 pounds so I gave him 20 pounds and told him to get his chopper.”

Donna, from West Hull, added: “He gave me a big hug and ran off to get it. He was so excited. His mother thanked me and said she couldn’t believe it.

“But to me, no one wants to be upset on their birthday, especially a young child. He was upset and I knew I could help him feel better.”

Donna didn’t initially notice that Karen was trying to reach her since she doesn’t use Facebook. She only found out about it when she saw a note at work.

“She got in touch with me which was a total shock. We spoke on the phone and she offered to send me a card,” Donna said.

“But I told her if she has any spare money, spend it on the kids. My reward was a hug from the birthday boy.”
