Maia Dunphy shared the “sudden punch in the gut” she experienced after reading a written notice and realizing her recently deceased mother’s phone number had been reassigned.
The mother of a broadcaster, Helen (76), from Dalkey, passed away on 27 February in St Vincent’s private hospital, having been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last year. She leaves behind husband Tom, Dunphy and her two siblings and a grandson, also named Tom.
Dunphy wrote on Twitter and Instagram this morning: “What a surprise… My mom’s phone number must have been reassigned.
“It’s weird when things completely blind you.”
Maia shared a snap of the announcement that read ‘Mom is gone’, to which her followers responded with messages of sympathy and support.
Maia, 45, has talked about how she is struggling to cope with the loss of her mother.
“I keep calling her because I would call her every day,” she told the Irish Independent in April.
“Honestly, I haven’t dealt with it yet. It’s only been six weeks and I can’t finish my head around it. “
“It was the worst thing in the world. We are very close and she is a great support for me.
The mother of one child said that six-year-old Tom loved his grandmother very much and missed her.
“She was like a second mother to Tom – she would take him away any time I was working, so it was tough just on a practical level.
“He is her only grandchild and I am so excited to be a grandma,” she continued.

“I just feel we should have more time together. But you just have to find comfort and go, “at least she has to be an old lady for six years”.
Dunphy said the family was “just trying to find the positives” following the loss.
“My mom and dad are such a happy couple. My father always said, “I’m so lucky to have such a good person and partnership for 50 years,” she said.
“I was very close to my mother. In fact, there was nothing left to say between me and her.
“The loss is huge, but I’m not sitting here wondering how things could have been different.”
