A suitable emergency water storage system is required

There’s no reason why flood water can’t be stored in huge cisterns, both to lower water levels during heavy rains and to use during droughts or summer fires.

Gunmen should also be subsidized to hold large bladders or tanks for emergencies, and every town should also, as in France, have water storage tanks controlled simply by elevation and pressure.

There should also be strategically placed cisterns, reservoirs, above the tree line of the forested mountains for emergencies as well.

Water storage will soon become more important than fuel storage.

Only a new era of basic income will save the seats of the TDs

With a new Taoiseach taking office in December and the impact of the cost-of-living crisis (“Fianna Fáil’s rebel TDs call for review of coalition agreement in new blow for Martin”, Irish IndependentJuly 16), TDs fear more for their seats in the next election than for the well-being of the people.

This current government and the governing parties are in confusion to the detriment of our people who are suffering from poor services and inflated prices.

Under the heading “Action against poverty and social inclusion” on page 75 of the program for the government it says: “(We will) ask the Low Wage Commission to examine universal basic income, based on a review of previous international pilot projects and their results in a pilot project to universal basic income during the lifetime of the government.”

There is enough evidence from other international basic income pilots to demonstrate the viability of the implemented basic income.

The politicians who campaign for the introduction of a basic income for all those over 18 years of age in 2023 will strengthen their eligibility and usher in a new era of fairness, equality and development in our society. The time for the introduction of the basic income has come.

Too bad RTÉ didn’t show Ireland’s greatest rugby triumph

After the Irish rugby team’s biggest success yet on the pitch, isn’t it a shame our RTÉ TV channels couldn’t show this brilliant Irish triumph?

Cats licked their wounds with a very cunning wail

Kilkenny fans and players were overheard on a bus singing on the way home after the All Ireland hurling final.

The words were: “Limerick, you are a disease”.

Kiely and Limerick gave us a boost with a magic formula

Our thanks and congratulations to the Limerick hurlers and management for the joy, excitement, joy and happiness they have brought to all the people of Limerick.

The Pfizer vaccine may have saved lives in recent years, but the Kiely vaccine has improved the quality of life for Limerick supporters.

But Professor Kiely may need to return to his lab and tweak his vaccine over the next six months as a few C variants peer over the fence and prepare for a massive attack.

Why groupthink must be fought across media

The excellent article by Sarah Carey (“Shallow analysis, simplified formats and crazy salaries show RTÉ has gone lazy”, Irish IndependentJuly 16) certainly analyzed RTÉ’s coverage of complex issues that “lead to polarized debates lasting minutes” and “do not leave room for an alternative narrative”.

This was most evident in the reporting leading up to the repeal of the Eighth Amendment.

Now the same thing is happening in the review of abortion legislation. How many even know this rating?

Sarah Carey is so right that “RTÉ can do better” – and not just RTÉ.

Our media, in general, with few exceptions, continues to support groupthink at the expense of factual and balanced reporting of what is critical to all of us.
