A Syrian student’s success at Newman College breaks the record

A STUDENT who fled war-torn Syria was among those who achieved top grades in high school and helped break a school record.

Alessar Badin got two A* and two A marks at Newman College in Hove, six years after she fled to the city.

She will continue her life in Sussex by studying Pharmacy at the University of Brighton from September.

“When I came to England, I immediately joined Newman. I went to school and then to college — and now I have grades that I’m really proud of,” Alessar said.

“The war was one of the reasons I moved here and also to be closer to my parents’ families who have lived here for a long time.

“I did chemistry, biology, math and French. It feels really good, I’m very relieved and very excited for the future.”

Newman College achieved its best-ever results with more than 40 percent of students achieving all As and A*s.

Deputy Principal Richard Marsh said he was extremely pleased with the outcome.

“We are very happy for all of our students who have achieved incredible results in both high school and BTECs,” he said.

“They have all faced the challenging circumstances of the past two years and we couldn’t be prouder of them.”

This year’s cohort of students did not take any GCSEs, meaning their A-level exams were the first official exams they took after the 6th grade SATs.

But there were plenty of good results, including for Arya Sharma, who will now go to Cambridge University to study medicine.

“It was really a pipe dream at first, I didn’t expect that I would actually achieve it,” she said.

“But when I walked in, me and my friend, who also walked in, texted each other and said, ‘Is that really real?’

“But now we’re getting confirmation of the results – me and my parents are just over the moon.”

The majority of students received their results online at home but that didn’t stop the celebrations as many went to the pub to join their friends this afternoon.
