A teenager dies after a sand hole collapses on him and his sister on the beach

Tragedy struck Tuesday afternoon when Levi Caverly dug a hole with his 17-year-old sister at Toms River’s Ocean Beach 3, a private beach near Chadwick Beach

A teenager has died after sand fell on him from a hole he dug on a beach.

The 18-year-old’s sister was also trapped in the crash on the Jersey Shore in Ocean County, New Jersey, in the United States.

The tragedy happened Tuesday afternoon when Levi Caverly was digging a hole with his 17-year-old sister at Toms River’s Ocean Beach 3, a private beach near Chadwick Beach, Toms River Police reported.

The hole, which officials said was dug deep with Frisbees, collapsed on the couple just after 4 p.m., according to Asbury Park Press.

The New York Post said Mr Caverly was crushed to death and it took first responders more than two and a half hours to pull him from the sand. His sister was rescued and given medical attention at the scene, police said.

Levi’s father, Todd Caverly, paid tribute to his son on Facebook, saying: “The sun is still rising. Your world can be changed forever in a second, with no warning and no second chance. Don’t neglect your salvation.

“Thank you all for praying. Please don’t stop,” he added. “Levi Caverly, there are no (sic) words to express my love for you.”

The tragedy happened just after 4pm Tuesday when several police and emergency response units were dispatched to the beach entrance near Seaview Road for reports of two teenagers trapped in the sand.

Angela Caverley, the teen’s mother, said her family was due to drive back to Maine on Wednesday afternoon to be closer to her church.

“Physically, my daughter is fine. She’s helping us drive us home right now,” she said.

She said the family rented a home in Toms River to enjoy a beach vacation and spent most of Tuesday afternoon on the shore prior to the fatal accident.
