“A Terrible Tragedy” – Two young men (aged 20) killed after a car collided with a truck in Mayo
Two men have died after a semi-truck collided with a car in Co Mayo.
ardaí in Mayo attended the scene of the fatal incident which occurred at 11.50pm last night – Wednesday 1 February – on the N60 Balla to Claremorris road in Facefield.
“Both occupants of the car, two men in their 20s, were pronounced dead at the scene. Their bodies have since been moved to the morgue at Mayo University Hospital. Autopsies will take place in due course,” said a Garda spokesman.
“The driver of the truck (aged 30) was taken to Mayo University Hospital as a precaution.”
The road is currently closed with local diversions. Garda forensic collision investigators will conduct an examination of the scene this morning.
Councilor Michael Kilcoyne, Leas-Cathaoirleach Mayo County Council, said the deaths of the two young men were a “horrific tragedy” for the area.
“I would like to offer my condolences to the families on behalf of Mayo County Council. It’s such a terrible tragedy. It underscores once again the dangers of being on the road, particularly on some roads that are not of the best quality,” said Cllr Kilcoyne.
Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to come forward and any road users with video footage, including dashcam, are asked to provide it to them.
