The continuing rise in petrol and diesel prices is prompting more and more motorists to consider switching to electric cars.

According to a survey by AA Ireland, just over a third of drivers have or would switch to an electric vehicle due to rising fuel costs.

Figures for July show that the average price of petrol in Ireland is now €2.14, while the average price of a liter of diesel is now €2.15.

In three weeks, diesel prices rose by an average of 4.4 percent from €2.05 to €2.14, AA said. Gasoline prices rose from €2.13 per liter to €2.16 – an increase of 1.4 percent.

The cost of putting fuel into an average petrol car is €777 more than last year, or 42 percent more.

The survey of over 4,200 drivers shows that 34 percent of them have an electric vehicle or would switch to an electric vehicle due to rising fuel costs.

Around half would buy a hybrid as their next vehicle.

The survey also shows that 33 percent are likely to have switched or have already switched to an electric vehicle (EV) due to climate change.

When asked why people would be reluctant to switch to an electric vehicle, 57pc said it was due to a lack of or insufficient charging infrastructure.

About 45 percent said it was because of fear or technological uncertainty, and 58 percent said it was because of cost.

Some of the motorists surveyed said there was a lack of information on these vehicles, while others said model availability and choice was limited.

Half of those surveyed said the government’s target of having one million electric vehicles on the road by 2030 is unachievable, while 30 percent said it could be done.

The survey also asked respondents what type of vehicle they would choose if they bought a different one or another in the next year.

Half said hybrid, 15pc said petrol, 19pc said diesel and 14pc said a battery EV.

Paddy Comyn, AA Ireland’s Head of Communications, said: “Our survey shows that there appears to be a greater need for car buyers to make the switch to electric or semi-electric vehicles, accelerated by ever-rising fuel costs.”

“With a larger selection of electric vehicles for sale, there is now a very healthy choice.”
