A toddler dies after being hit by a giant hailstone

A 20-month-old girl died after being hit on the head during a violent hailstorm that wreaked havoc in Catalonia, northeast Spain.

Hailstones measuring 1.1 cm in size and up to 10 cm in diameter rained in an area around the village of La Bisbal d’Emporda on Tuesday. They inflicted injuries – mostly broken bones and bruises – on about 50 other people, said the broadcaster TV3.

“People started screaming and hiding,” said musician Sicus Carbonell, who filmed the destructive aftermath of the storm at Castell d’Emporda, a nearby hotel where his band was playing on a canvas-covered terrace, as everyone were forced to take cover.

“There was chaos, little boys and girls running around alone, some parents were able to grab their children,” he said.

“There was a little girl of about three or four who wasn’t hiding under the parasol. I ran out and grabbed her…

“Then a hailstone broke through the fabric … and I told my group that either we were going to the restaurant or one of those tennis balls was going to land on us and we weren’t going to make it.”

The toddler, who was hit in the head in La Bisbal d’Emporda, died at Girona’s Trueta Hospital, authorities there said.

According to Meteocat, the hailstones were the largest in Catalonia in two decades. Parts of the region remained on storm alert on Wednesday.
